CITY COUNCIL MINUTES
TUESDAY, MARCH 7, 2017
The Prattville City Council met in regular session on Tuesday, March 7, 2017, at 6:00 p.m. in
the Council Chambers at City Hall. After the Pledge of Allegiance to the American Flag, Council
President Striplin gave the invocation. Roll was called and all Councilors were present.
THE CHARACTER TRAIT OF THE MONTH IS ENTHUSIASM: Expressing joy in each task
as I give it my best effort.
APPROVAL OF MINUTES: Public Hearing and City Council Meeting February 21, 2017
Council President Pro Tempore Brown made a motion to adopt the minutes and Councilor
Starnes seconded the motion. With no discussion, the minutes were adopted (7-0).
COMMENTS FROM PERSONS PRESENT REGARDING TONIGHT’S AGENDA:
None
MAYOR’S REPORT:
Mayor Gillespie was granted a Point of Privilege to allow Police Chief Mark Thompson to
announce Officer Brian Gentry’s promotion to Sergeant. The Mayor congratulated Sargent
Gentry and thanked his family for their support.
Assistant Fire Chief Allen Owens announced that the Prattville Fire Department will issue the
following awards tonight:
Captain Steve Johnson will be receiving the 2016 Firefighter of the Year and Medal of Valor
for saving a woman’s life from a burning car in Montgomery while off duty.
Sergeant Dow Perry will be receiving the Meritorious Service Award and Unit Citation Award
for saving the life of a 19-year-old while on duty.
Captain Robert Van Valkenburg and Firefighter Brandon Pate will also be receiving the Unit
Citation Award for their assistance to Sergeant Dow Perry during the resuscitation of the 19-
year-old.
Barbara Simpson and Brittany Glenn of the Performing Arts Department shared that Way off
Broadway Theatre’s “To Kill a Mockingbird” was the first sell out performance in the theatre’s
history. The cast and crew, as well as Barbara and Brittany were acknowledged for their hard
work.
The Mayor explained that Item #2 on the Consent Agenda is not a new tax, but a renewal of
what is already in the books.
The ALDOT infrastructure project on Jensen Road will begin on Friday. Jensen Road will be
closed at Hwy 82 for 10 days. Alternate routes will be posted via signage.

Strichik seconded the motion. The items were placed on a Consent Agenda (7-0). Council

Strichik seconded the motion. By point of order, the council rules must be suspended if
immediate action is to be considered. Councilor Boone made a motion to suspend the rules
and Councilor Cables seconded the motion. The rules were suspended (7-0). There being no
discussion, the Ordinance was adopted with the following results:

Councilor Boone made a motion to adopt the Resolution and Councilor Starnes seconded the
motion. Council President Striplin noted that the dollar amount on Line 25 was incorrect.
Councilor Boone made a motion to amend line 25 to read $8,185.00 instead of $$8,992.00 and
Councilor Strichik seconded the motion. The resolution was amended (7-0). There being no
further discussion, the amended Resolution was adopted with the following results:

The Mayor thanked all employees working on the project on Wright Street in District 6.
The Mayor thanked all departments for all that they do.
Council President Striplin commended all employees who received awards tonight and the cast
of Way Off Broadway Theater for their success. He thanked all employees for their hard work.
ADJOURN:
There being no further business to come before the council, Councilor Starnes made a motion
to adjourn and Councilor Strichik seconded the motion. The meeting adjourned (7-0) at 6:24
p.m.
