CITY COUNCIL MINUTES
TUESDAY, AUGUST 6, 2019
6:06 P.M.
The Prattville City Council met in regular session on Tuesday, August 6, 2019, at 6:06 p.m. in
the Council Chambers at City Hall. After the Pledge of Allegiance to the American Flag,
Councilor Cables gave the invocation. Roll was called and Council President Striplin and
Councilor Boone were recorded as being absent.
Council President Pro Tempore Brown noted that Council President Striplin and Councilor
Boone were attending the 2019 EDAA Summer Conference.
THE CHARACTER TRAIT OF THE MONTH IS ATTENTIVENESS: Showing the worth of a
person or task by giving my undivided attention.
APPROVAL OF MINUTES: Public Hearing and City Council Meeting July 16, 2019 &
Special Called Public Hearing and City Council Meeting July 22, 2019.
Councilor Strichik made a motion to adopt the minutes and Councilor Jackson seconded the
motion. With no discussion, the minutes were adopted (5-0).
COMMENTS FROM PERSONS PRESENT REGARDING TONIGHT’S AGENDA:
Jon Lee Finnegan, 211 Deer Trace, addressed the Council regarding Agenda Item #4, to set
a public hearing to zone property at 1324 Upper Kingston Road. Ms. Finnegan was unable to
attend the Planning Commission meeting at which this item was discussed. She did however
watch a video recording of that meeting, and suggested that the actions taken regarding this
property were confusing. She urged the Council to watch the video.
Brandenn Pickett, the nephew of Lorenzo “Coach Lo” Pickett addressed the council regarding
Agenda Item #7, to rename Spring Hill Park as Lorenzo “Coach Lo” Pickett Park. Mr. Pickett
thanked the Council for considering this item. Coach Lo was heavily invested in his family and
community. Mr. Pickett attributed his uncle’s dedication to family to the influence of his
grandmother, who had 15 children. Coach Lo touched the lives of many young people
regardless of their background, and is deserving of this honor. Mr. Pickett hopes that by
renaming the park future generations will ask who Coach Lo was and be able to learn from his
example.

Councilor Strichik reported that the Parks and Recreation Committee met on Friday, August 2,
2019 and discussed future park projects, including renaming Spring Hill Park after Coach Lo.

COMMENTS FROM PERSONS PRESENT:
Jon Lee Finnegan, 211 Deer Trace, applauded the Council for renaming the park to Lorenzo
“Coach Lo” Pickett Park. She hoped that since there are plans to renovate the old Boys and
Girls Club building, that the park would be upgraded as well. Ms. Finnegan urged the council,
once more, to watch the planning commission video regarding Agenda Item #4.
Marty Roney, 1038 Wright Street, informed the council that there had been a drainage issue in
his neighborhood. Mr. Roney contacted his councilor and the City Engineer Robby Anderson
as a result the issue was resolved. On another occasion, a home behind his own had an
overgrown yard. Once the issue was reported the City had the lot cut. Mr. Roney wanted to
point out the City had done an exceptional job in both instances, and he wanted to give
recognition for that. Mr. Roney also thanked the Council for voting to rename the park after
Coach Lo.
Lorenzo “Coach Lo” Pickett’s mother thanked the Council for renaming the park after her son.
Betty Parker, informed the Council that her truck had been stolen and subsequently ended up
at a local wrecker service’s yard. Ms. Parker received a bill from that company and she doesn’t
believe she should have to pay it. Ms. Parker believes that the police department should have
notified her that the vehicle was found. Council President Pro Tempore Brown asked Ms.
Parker to consult with the Police and Mayor’s Departments on this matter.
CLOSING COMMENTS:
Councilor Jackson thanked the Council for passing the resolution to rename the park after
Coach Lo. Coach Lo was a selfless man with great work ethic. The renaming of this park for
him has been long overdue. Coach Lo inspired so many young people, and his legacy will live
on.
Councilor Starnes remembered Coach Lo as always having a smile on his face. Councilor
Starnes recalled asking Councilor Jackson for his reasoning in wanting to rename this park for
Coach Lo. Councilor Jackson preceded to tell Councilor Starnes of all that Coach Lo
contributed to his community, as well as the impact he had on several youths throughout the
City. Councilor Starnes was very impressed and quickly agreed that renaming the park in
Coach Lo’s honor was the right thing to do.
Councilor Cables also remembered Coach Lo as always having smile.

Councilor Strichik described Coach Lo as a mentor, and a man who personally saw to it that
so many youths chose to take a different and better path in life than the one they could have
so easily been on.
Councilor Brown thanked the Pickett family.
Councilor Brown announced that there would be a Street Committee Meeting on August 14th
at 3:30pm.
There being no further business to come before the council, Councilor Strichik made a motion
to adjourn and Councilor Starnes seconded the motion. The meeting adjourned (5-0) at 6:45
p.m.
